Anthro Class Dullard
So, last night was my Anthropology class, it's always really interesting, unfortunately, my classmates leave something to be desired. We were talking about different stress levels in different social classes. You can measure the level of the hormone cortisol in saliva, which is correlated with stress levels in the body. In the study we were discussing, they took people in different socio-economic groups and tested their resting cortisol levels. Then they pissed them off and stressed them out in various ways and measured it again. The rich had lower levels of cortisol while at rest, and when stressed their levels rose but not as much as the cortisol levels of the poor. This makes sense to me, if you have more underlying stress, if you feel disenfranchised, you're going to be more stressed at rest and have a bigger reaction to a stimulus. If you're rich and know you can deal with whatever life throws at you, you give the orders and don't follow them, you aren't going to get as pissed off, even in a bad situation. Dullards in the class were putting up their hands (I already hate people who put up their hands in classes of 2oo or more people) and suggesting that it was a genetically high level of cortisol. This would be an intelligent, critical question if they asked what the controls where to determine that it wasn't the genetic predisposition of one particular ethnic group. But these yahoos were working up to suggesting that the poor are poor because they are genetically predisposed to be poor. So my tutorial is tonight, I can't skip it because I need my exam back and they are giving them out in tutorial. The guy who was spear-heading the unfortunate side of the debate in class last night is in my tutorial, and talks more than anyone in the tutorial. If he says one stupid thing tonight, I'm going to get my participation points for the whole term by ripping him a new one! This guy is my new anthro class enemy.

We got all caught up in handing the exam back and didn't really end up talking about it. However, one of the girls in the class punctuated a comment that she was making on gender differentials in psychological disease with "I'm not a feminist but..." So I ripped her a new one instead.
