CHURCH POINT, N.S. - A French-language university in Nova Scotia is offering its graduates free tuition to return to school if they can't find a job in their field.
Université Sainte-Anne's free-tuition guarantee applies to students who enroll starting this year in one of seven programs at the campus in Church Point, about 240 kilometres west of Halifax.
INDEPTH: Paying tuition
If they don't have a job a year after graduating, and can prove that they looked, they can come back to try another program without having to pay course fees. They must still pay for their books and housing, though.
University president André Roberge admits his offer is more of a marketing ploy than an act of compassion. The seven programs covered – from education to information technology to paramedic training – are sought-after fields.
"We know that the placement rates for the graduates in some programs is 100 per cent," he said. "It's a way to give them confidence. It's also a way to get us better known."
The university's guarantee helped convince Nicole Muise to switch schools and apply to Université Saint-Anne.
"That was a really good incentive, to know that I could be guaranteed a job pretty much or else I could come back," she said.
The university says the list of programs that come with a guarantee may change in the future, depending on the job market.
