Despite a new safety ruling, Toronto is sticking with its plan to ban one of the most widely used herbicides in Canada.
Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency yesterday announced it had completed its re-evaluation of 2,4-D and that based on the scientific information, the product can safely be used on lawns when label directions are followed.
The agency is in the process of reassessing all pest-control products approved before 1995. Its decision on 2,4-D will not be finalized for 60 days.
Toronto Public Health, however, noted the federal re-evaluation will not change the bylaw created to curb commercial use of many pesticides, a class that includes herbicides, by fall.
Monica Campbell, manager of the environmental protection office of Toronto Public Health, said the bylaw governing commercial use of the products takes effect in September. The bylaw for homeowners takes effect in September 2007.
