Moral Quandry

Well not really, it's more of a poll, how far should I go to cover my ass?
We get faxes in on sale days which are really important and have to be dealt with quickly or we can loose large amounts of money. So when I went on lunch, I forwarded the phones to one of the other folks here and made sure she was watching the fax machine.
While I was at lunch, one of these important faxes came in and they didn't deal with it fast enough and lost thousands of dollars.
The time on the fax machine was wrong because I never reset it for daylight savings time. Now it's an hour ahead, so if I chage it now, it will look like they got it an hour later than they did. Which will make my lousy nasty co-workers look better. If I leave it, my co-workers will look bad, but I'll also look a little bit bad for not changing the fax machine time. And they will notice, because there is going to be a witch hunt over this money.
So if I cover my ass and change it now, then I look a little better and they look a lot better, if I don't change it, I look a bit bad and they look a lot bad. Keeping in mind that these people are my workplace tormentors.
What do you guys think?

Well do you care if you look bad? Changing the clock on the fax machine isnt high on the priority list if you ask me...I wouldnt even think that you had to...shouldnt those things be automatic??

Howwever, if you can make them look not bad in a "Jennifer saves the day" type move....will it be recognizd? Or will they bitch anyway? If you're certain they're giong to bitch no matter what, then let them look a lot bad....

There is no possible way that I can cover their asses in a way that they would appreciate. They'll probably try to pin it on me even though it was nothing to do with me. If I told them that I'd covered their asses, they'd probably tell the boss what I'd done to take the heat off themselves. And I already look like dog shit around here anyway, I've got no reputation to protect.

Funny story, nothing to do with the post, but...
One of the guys called me and yelled at me this morning, then hung up on me, then had to call me right back because he forgot to ask me about something else. I laughed so hard at his discomfort when he got off the phone!

Then FUCK THEM!!! Who gives a shit that they look bad.

You were on lunch. You're designated lunch....if they bitch at all....then Yes, you didnt change the clock on the fax machine, but that has NO BEARING on what time the faxes come in, and who gets them. Its not like changing the clocks could have saved this predicament.

Let them look bad....assholes

fuck 'em. don't cover anyone's ass, especially yours. leave the fax machine. the issue here was that they weren't watching it. the time stamp is minor. ignore that, you forgot to do it, don't own up to them about it, just shut up and let the blame flow as it naturally would without the added complication of the time stamp.

In case anyone is interested in the conclusion of this tale. I still got in trouble.
